A non Slum Dog Millionaire Oscar story about India!!

I see the congratulation threads and all the hoopla in the Indian papers about the success and recognition received by Slum Dog Millionaire. I haven't read the book or watched the movie; so hard for me to comment. I did hear the excellent music score by A.R. Rahman and thought that the best writer in Bollywood was recognized on a global stage - Gulzar

Well, with all the pomp around this movie another Oscar winner shot in India, about Indians doesn't seem to get any press. This story is about real people and real efforts and I am sure once you read, you will agree with the touching service it illustrated!

The winner in the Best Short Documentary category is a film called Smile Pinki directed by Megan Mylan. The documentary is about children that are born with a lip cleft. I won't post pictures as they will gross all of us out and I am sure you have seen them on the streets and in magazines asking for donations (btw, most of those charities are fraudulent ). The corrective surgery is simple and not costly, but most of these children are poor and have no access to medical care. A surgeon Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh runs an organization that finds these kids and performs corrective surgery for free, thus changing their lives for the good, forever! If you watched the Oscars you would have noticed Dr. Singh accepting the award along with Megan.

I haven't watched the documentary in its entirety. I need to find if I can get an original copy somewhere. If at the minimum this award heightens the awareness of the parents of the affected children and gets them to a hospital, a larger cause would be served.

Thanks Megan and Dr. Singh for bringing Pinki to everyone and for making her smile!
